TIME

St Andrews, Scotland : 1981

13 hour continuous performance for St Andrews University Festival, St Andrews.

14 February 1981

MacLennan – dressed at first all in black, then later naked with a black line from his neck to his navel – walks around the room. The floor is coated in a large rectangle of flour with candles around its edges. In the centre stands a stage lamp adorned with white flowers.

‘Walking around the room, he would take a white flower, on the hour, each hour, from behind the door and place it on the floor covered with a “carpet” of white flour. The light at one end of the space was made to appear as a large flower.

While the objects relate to time as a day for and of celebration, romantic love and gifts of flowers, the action of walking relates to time in a somewhat sinister way: walking as wearing time, moving towards death…’
